![]() It is unkind to the reader in ways that I've never experienced before. It does not attempt to shock or employ compositional tricks to throw the reader off balance, or even actively antagonize the whole practice of writing/reading like a lot of post-modern lit, but instead seems to have been organically conceived from a seed of true malice. It is (strangely, in its refined and formal prose) one of the most hostile things I have ever read. It's almost like a conceptual piece of art from a 16th century demon/alien, full of codes and clues to a likely unsolvable mystery that is probably meaningless. Wow, never thought I'd see a post about JtP on Reddit! In the end though the words are written on the paper the true canvas is the mind of the reader. Since they have no solid plot to leave in the mind of the reader we are left with strange emotions, feelings and a sense of foreboding and atmosphere in our mind. This gives rise to a shifting dynamic narrative with multitude of stories to tell. But with progression as more and more they clash with each other in the most unusual manner they gain more than a single definition. And within that alienly joined sentences repetitive set of words gain more than one sense of definition.įirst those words evoke only the usual concepts that's associated with them. ![]() Those sentences fit with each other in a dimension probably not the one reader is inhabiting. It is done via with a unique structuring of sentence. This is not done via your usual gimmick in story telling. And at this level I believe Schwartz has done what can be called as an impossible task: creating not a single story but multiple maybe endless stories or a dynamic structure a statistics arrangement of words. With the elimination of those components Schwartz brings our attention to a more basic structure that makes a story. There are no solid ground to work upon and that exactly was why I couldn't read it in initial attempts. But this book has none of them in the usual sense of the word. When talking about a book in an online platform like this it's easy to stuck with common components that makes every story a story: plot, characters, setting etc and work from there. I decided to make a post here after finally reading it because I have no idea what to do with what I have read. ![]() I tried reading this like 5 times for past two years and not making beyond chapter two.
